Godzilla (PG 15) – Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, directed by Gareth Edwards

The lethal lizard is back for more! After a very disappointing remake in 1997, fans of the terrifying creature from  under the sea are in for a spectacle.

This revamp is a more respectful look at the original 1954 Japanese science fiction ‘kaiju’ classic or monster film, which began life as a deadly serious allegory about the nuclear age in Japan.

Working at a nuclear reactor in Japan, American scientist Joe Brody (Cranston) witnesses a suspicious accident blamed on an underground earthquake. Over the years, Brody becomes more and more paranoid, but for good reason – the government is trying to cover something up. When his son Ford (Taylor-Johnson) returns to Japan to visit his dad, they stumble upon the truth.

When the nuclear reactor awakens two giant monsters, or MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), destruction takes centre stage. As the creatures struggle to get to each other in hopes of mating, the military gets involved. However, bombs and missiles don’t seem to stop them.

The all-star cast isn’t utilised nearly as much as it should be, struggling with weak storylines and characters. However, Edwards does excel with the action sequences – and cinema-goers will have plenty of explosions and annihilation shots to savour.

Despite the fact the star of the show only makes his appearance well into the second act, Godzilla ticks all the boxes for a summer blockbuster. Godzilla hits the big screen on Thursday 15th May.
