Transcendence (TBA) – Starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall and Morgan Freeman, directed by Wally Pfister
In a world that is constantly evolving, what does the future hold for the human race?
Dr Will Caster (Depp) is a leading Artificial Intelligence researcher whose experiments have made him the prime target of anti-technology activists who will stop at nothing to halt the doctor’s projects. Working to develop a cutting edge machine that has the ability to express a full range of human emotions with the collective intelligence of all of mankind, Dr Caster and his team strive to create a better future with the use of technology.
When a group of activists known as RIFT (Revolutionary Independence From Technology) try to murder Caster, they unwittingly cause him to push the boundaries even further as he puts his own transcendence to the test. With Caster’s wife Evelyn (Hall) and best friend Max (Paul Bettany) eager to save him, they upload his consciousness to a supercomputer.
But that consciousness, thirsty for more power, is now the experiment itself, going beyond the normal limits of a human. And as a virtual army builds, Evelyn and Max realise the danger they’ve put the world in and fear Caster, who claims his destructive acts are a form of evolution, cannot be stopped.
Oscar-winner Pfister, the long-time cinematographer for Christopher Nolan (Batman trilogy), seems comfortable in his first role in the director’s chair.
Transcendence hits theatres Thursday 17th April.
