Maleficent (PG) – Starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley, directed by Robert Stromberg

The story of Sleeping Beauty takes a much darker turn with this rendition. Disney’s newest spin on the eagerly anticipated fantasy film tells the tale of the fairy Maleficent. And it’s certainly not what you’d expect.

The film fills in the back-story of how Maleficent (Jolie) becomes who she is – a dark and menacing fairy that curses an innocent infant child in a fit of revenge.

Once a beautiful and pure-hearted fairy, Maleficent lived a quiet forest life before invading humans came. After an unspeakable act of betrayal (and one lost pair of wings) the fairy slowly but surely descends into a spiral of evil.

However things take a turn when she discovers that the angelic, golden haired princess Aurora, (played by Dakota Fanning’s little sister Elle) may be her only hope for redemption.

Moviegoers will delight in the magical world created by Disney. Described both as science fiction and fantasy, the action and animation is sure to keep fans entertained. And Jolie, dressed in black horns and light facial prosthetics, certainly is perfectly cast as the enigmatic and evil fairy.

This is one fairytale film you should be queuing up to see. Maleficent hits the big screen on Thursday 29th May.
