X-Men: Days of Future Past (PG13) – Starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Halle Berry, directed by Bryan Singer

EVEN for a franchise notable for its ensemble nature, the latest addition to the X-Men series has an incredible number of super-powered characters on show.

Bringing together the stars from the original movies (X-Men and X2 having also been directed by Singer) and the more recent ‘origins’ instalment (First Class), X-Men: Days of Future Past sees the mutant superhero team racing to save the world – in both the past and a post-apocalyptic near-future.

Based on one of the most famous storylines from the comicbook source material, DoFP sees the X-Men battling to survive in a horrifying future, where towering killer robots, the Sentinels, have laid waste to both mutant and humankind. In a desperate bid to change history, the surviving heroes led by Charles Xavier (Stewart) send Wolverine (Jackman) back through time, to stop the catalytic incident that sets off the cataclysmic chain of events.

Meeting the younger version of Xavier (McAvoy), Wolverine races against time to convince him of the future peril, and gather together a team powerful enough to change history.

With a cast that includes McKellen and Michael Fassbender (as past and present versions of Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (as Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (as key player Mystique) as well as a plethora of other famous faces, DoFP is a roller-coaster ride of all-out action and stunning super-power-stacked set pieces.

Singer orchestrates the huge cast well, and with a sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, already in the pre-planning stage, the future looks bright for the mutant marvels.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in cinemas this Thursday 22nd May.
