The Invisible Woman (15+) – starring Ralph Fiennes, Felicity Jones and Kristin Scott Thomas, directed by Ralph Fiennes

An accomplished married man and a beautiful young woman are at the centre of this drama. Part love affair and part historical hush-up, the story of prolific English writer Charles Dickens and Ellen ‘Nelly’ Ternan is at once intriguing and delicately expressed.

Played out with meaningful looks, wistful flashbacks and hushed conversations, this Victorian Era romance sees Nelly (Jones) entranced by the brilliant and celebrated author, Charles Dickens (Fiennes). At the height of his career, Dickens is a complex and not-entirely likable figure who becomes infatuated with the young 18-year-old actress.

Based on the book by Abi Morgan and Claire Tomalin, the film shows that all the women who feature in Dickens’ life – Nelly and his long suffering wife – find themselves without a voice. Unacknowledged or without power to make decisions, they play the parts that Dickens creates.

Fiennes’ second attempt at directing sees the movie-goer immersed in the era – with period costumes and gorgeous cinematography. Topped with stellar performances from the entire cast, this delicately nuanced drama will no doubt have fans of Fiennes asking, “Please sir, can I have some more?”

The Invisible Woman hits the big screen on Thursday 10th April.
