The second edition of Manar Abu Dhabi, part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi initiative led by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has launched in Al Ain for the first time, opening to the public on 1 November 2025.
Centred on the theme “The Light Compass” and curated by Khai Hori (Artistic Director), Alia Zaal Lootah (Curator), Munira Al Sayegh (Curator), and Mariam Alshehhi (Assistant Curator), this edition showcases light-based artworks by six Emirati and international artists. The installations illuminate Al Jimi and Al Qattara oases, which are part of Al Ain’s cultural sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The initiative continues to highlight Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering contemporary public art while honouring the emirate’s environment, cultural heritage and creative innovation.
The launch weekend aligned with the opening of Al Ain’s Traditional Handicrafts Festival, drawing thousands of visitors who explored immersive works by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Khalid Shafar, Maitha Hamdan, Abdalla Almulla, Ammar Al Attar and Christian Brinkmann. These installations guided visitors through an evocative blend of sound, space and light, underscoring Abu Dhabi’s emerging presence as a global platform for cultural dialogue and artistic exchange.
Manar Abu Dhabi began with a public talk titled “Public Art & the Al Ain Landscape,” led by curator Alia Zaal Lootah, providing insight into the creative process behind the artworks and the importance of public art in reflecting the identity and heritage of the emirate.
During the exhibition, the Al Qattara and Al Jimi oases host food and drink pop-ups, curated tours and photography workshops, encouraging visitors to discover art, culture and community within the unique landscapes of Al Ain’s historic oases.
Manar Abu Dhabi runs daily from 5:30PM to 12:00 AM until 4 January 2026. Admission is free, and guided tours are offered every day at 7:00PM for AED50 per person.
