New Regulations Aim to Ensure Continuous Supply
The UAE has introduced a system to prevent monopolies on UAE medical products. The goal is to ensure these products remain continuously available across the country. The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) announced the regulations on February 24, 2026. Under the new rules, pharmaceutical companies must appoint multiple authorized agents for each product.
Reducing Reliance on Single Suppliers
The measure ensures essential medications remain available even during emergencies or operational disruptions. By diversifying distribution channels, the UAE reduces dependence on single suppliers and strengthens public health protection.
Leadership Perspective
Saeed bin Mubarak Al Hajeri, Minister of State and Chairman of the EDE, said the system “will help ensure the continuous availability of medical products, reinforcing drug security as one of the fundamental pillars of comprehensive health security,” according to state news agency Wam. He also noted the UAE’s role as a leading hub for pharmaceutical investment in the region and globally.
Attracting International Investment
Experts suggest the regulations could make the UAE more appealing to international pharmaceutical companies. By providing a stable framework for distribution, the rules strengthen supply chain diversification, improve regulatory efficiency, and create a flexible environment that supports long-term market sustainability.
Protecting Patients and Supply Chains
The new rules form part of a broader effort to safeguard patients and maintain uninterrupted access to medications. The regulations do not directly address pricing or manufacturing. However, they aim to reduce shortages and ensure essential drugs remain widely accessible.
Forward-Looking Implementation
The EDE plans to implement the system in the coming months. Analysts note that requiring multiple authorized agents allows the UAE to respond quickly to global supply disruptions. It also encourages competition among suppliers and increases transparency in the distribution of UAE medical products. Ultimately, these changes benefit healthcare providers and patients nationwide.
