Hitachi Energy has been named the global market share leader in grid automation for electric utilities, according to a new study by ARC Advisory Group.

The findings, released in June 2025 as part of ARC’s Grid Automation Global Market Study 2024–2029, place Hitachi Energy ahead of competitors in both software and hardware categories for electric power transmission and distribution.

The company was recognized as number one worldwide in Grid Control & Management, Outage Management, and AI Applications. It also leads in hardware such as measurement devices, RTUs, and wireless and wired networks.

Richard Rys, ARC Advisory’s director of consulting and lead researcher on the study, said grid automation was becoming indispensable.

“Our analysis shows Hitachi Energy at the top of the leaderboard. Its heritage in energy, domain expertise, integrated solutions, and digitalisation capabilities will continue to drive leadership,” he said.

The report highlights growing demand for grid automation due to factors such as renewable energy integration, grid-storage assets, and market structures like virtual power plants. It also notes heightened investment in regions rebuilding or upgrading electricity infrastructure following extreme weather or conflict.

Massimo Danieli, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Grid Automation business unit, said the market was at a turning point.

“The grid automation market is at an inflection point. The future of the power grid depends on accelerating digital innovation and new capabilities,” he said.

“As the market leader, we are proud to deliver advanced solutions that modernise infrastructure, enhance resilience, and speed the transition to cleaner energy.”

Hitachi Energy’s portfolio spans planning, monitoring, control, protection, and trading operations. Its technologies, the company says, are designed to make the grid safer, more efficient, and more sustainable.

The ARC study, published annually since 2021, provides detailed market analysis and forecasts for grid automation across five years. It tracks both transmission and distribution systems that serve residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

Founded in 1986, ARC Advisory Group is regarded as one of the leading technology research and advisory firms for energy and infrastructure.
