A significant leak has reportedly revealed details about Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6, including the development of a dockable handheld console that could challenge Nintendo’s next-generation Switch.
While Sony has not yet confirmed the existence of the PS6, reports circulating on social media and in tech communities suggest the gaming giant is preparing three distinct systems. If true, this would mark the first time the PlayStation brand has launched with multiple hardware variations at once.
The leak originated from content creator Moore’s Law Is Dead, who shared the information via a YouTube video. According to the claims, Sony is working on three versions of the console: a small form-factor model dubbed the PS6S, a dockable handheld console, and the base high-performance PS6, which is expected to carry the highest price tag.
Both the PS6S and the portable version are reported to feature AMD’s Canis APU, while the main PS6 will be powered by a new Orion APU. Early specifications suggest the Orion chip could rival Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5080 graphics card, offering significant improvements in ray tracing performance.
Leaks shared by social media user “NIB” further claimed that the new ray tracing technology in the base PS6 would be three times more powerful than that found in the PlayStation 5. If accurate, this would represent a major leap in graphical fidelity for Sony’s next flagship console.
Pricing details have also surfaced, with estimates suggesting the PS6S could cost between $299 and $399, the handheld version $399 to $499, and the base PS6 anywhere from $549 to $699.
The handheld system in particular has generated widespread attention. Multiple leaked documents allegedly describe the device as fully dockable, similar to Nintendo’s Switch console. Moore’s Law Is Dead suggested it would feature a “1080p, 60 or 120 Hz screen,” offering smooth performance in handheld mode. When docked, it is expected to run at levels comparable to — or even exceeding — the PlayStation 5.
This approach would mark Sony’s return to portable gaming hardware after the discontinuation of the PlayStation Vita in 2019. A dockable, high-performance handheld could potentially reposition Sony as a direct competitor in the hybrid console space dominated by Nintendo.
The leaks have gained traction due to Moore’s Law Is Dead’s history of accurate predictions, including specifications for the PS5 Pro before its official announcement. However, industry analysts urge caution, noting that Sony has made no official announcements regarding its next console.
The PlayStation 5, released in late 2020, remains in high demand, and Sony has consistently stated its focus on improving supply chains and expanding the PS5’s game library. Nevertheless, speculation about the PS6 continues to grow as players look ahead to the next generation of gaming hardware.
If the leaks prove correct, Sony’s strategy for the PS6 could redefine how players engage with the PlayStation ecosystem—offering a choice between compact, portable, and high-performance systems under a single brand.
