Roblox, one of the world’s most popular online gaming platforms, is under mounting global scrutiny as governments tighten restrictions over child safety concerns.
The game, played by more than 70 million people daily, has already been banned in several countries amid allegations of exposing children to harmful content and exploitation risks.
Qatar bans Roblox amid social media outcry
The latest ban came this week from Qatar, where authorities moved to block Roblox following growing pressure on social media. Parents and community groups accused the platform of failing to protect children from inappropriate content and potential predators.
Jordan is reportedly considering a similar ban. While Roblox remains available for download in the country, local reports suggest restrictions may soon follow.
Long list of countries restricting the platform
Roblox is no stranger to international backlash. Turkey banned the platform in August 2024, citing concerns about child exploitation, unsafe interactions, and in-game currency spending. Oman and China had already blocked access by 2022, with China imposing broader restrictions on online games for minors.
The platform’s critics argue that its content moderation is insufficient to safeguard younger players from explicit or manipulative content.
US pressure grows but no action yet
In the United States, Roblox faces increasing calls from parents and advocacy groups for stronger protections or outright restrictions. However, the government has not taken regulatory action so far.
The controversy deepened after Roblox banned “Schlep,” a YouTuber who styled himself as a “predator hunter.” He claimed to have assisted in the arrest of several alleged predators on the platform before his account was suspended for guideline violations, including impersonating minors.
The ban drew attention from American journalist Chris Hansen, host of To Catch a Predator, who said he was launching his own investigation into Roblox with Schlep’s assistance.
“Children deserve to be safe online,” Hansen said in a recent social media video. “We are deep into it—I’ve already interviewed law enforcement and victims.”
Roblox Corporation has defended its policies, stressing that protecting young players remains its top priority, while insisting Schlep’s methods endangered user privacy.
As the debate intensifies, Roblox faces a growing challenge to balance its vast popularity with mounting global demands for stricter child protections.
