The Hyatt Capital Gate Hotel is arguably one of the most iconic buildings in Abu Dhabi. With its curving structure, twinkling night-lights and exterior restaurant balcony, it stands proud along the Khaleej Al Arabi highway. We made our way to 18˚ where a spectacular view and exciting menu awaited us.
There are almost three sections to this restaurant – the balcony area overlooking the Al Bateen district, the open kitchen space where diners can see the chefs at work, and finally a selection of cosy booths, which add to the dynamism of the atmosphere.
The menu focuses on five countries and its cuisines – Italy, Turkey Greece, Syria and Lebanon. We started with an appetiser from Greece. Deep fried calamari with semolina, Cajun spices and aioli sauce was quickly polished off before our guest had a chance to sample one! However, our fellow diner was suitably pleased with the grilled halloumi cheese, watermelon, honey and walnut salad. An interesting blend of flavours for the palate; a must-try.
Staying Greek, we opted for the slow-cooked braised lamb shank. Clean bones shot up from the plate as tender lamb forms the foundation of the dish; a moat of creamy mashed potato surrounded the meat, which had been generously drizzled in cumin jus.
An easy choice for our friend – the lobster ravioli, stracciatella cheese, violet chips and a sprinkling of fresh chives. This dish was simple and elegant as each flavour blended perfectly; this was another dish that was polished off quickly.
Still full from our shanks, we decided to give dessert a miss, however our guest made a beeline for the strawberry cake. Adorned will blueberries, strawberries and a sugary strawberry sauce, this delicious dessert was topped off with a pistachio crown and white chocolate decoration – almost too pretty to eat.
