All roads lead to the Western Region for an annual watersports bonanza

It’s that time of year when the quiet coastal town of Mirfa in Al Gharbia – otherwise known as the Western Region – welcomes sports enthusiasts and visitors to its picturesque shores for an annual watersports event.

Since 2009, Al Gharbia Watersports Festival has become a showcase for the region’s natural beauty and culture while promoting sports and an active lifestyle.

The ten-day event features an assortment of activities including wakeboarding, beach volleyball, beach football, sand sculptures, swimming competitions, dhow races and live entertainment.

Some events to watch out for include the local rowing race, regatta race, Al Bawaneesh sailing race, the kite surfing competition and the sailing race – during which nearly 60 boats will compete over a 15km course.

Around 11 wooden boats traditionally used for fishing in shallow waters will race 2km in the jenana race for fares.

The marwah sailing race will see 20 to 25 sailors aboard 60ft boats racing to complete a 30km course.

There will be food stalls and you can set up a tent for the day. Children can get in on the action too by enjoying face painting, workshops and games.

23rd April-2nd May. Free. Mirfa Public Beach. 4pm-10pm. For more information visit:
