LuLu Group, the region’s leading retailer, has taken a major step in its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy with the launch of a landmark solar energy initiative across five of its flagship facilities in Dubai.
The ambitious project, developed in partnership with Positive Zero, aims to significantly reduce LuLu’s carbon footprint while generating long-term energy savings, aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 vision and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
Solar rooftop installations are being deployed at LuLu Hypermarkets in Al Warqa, Rashidiya, and Dubai Investment Park (DIP), as well as at the LuLu Central Logistics hub in DIP and the Regional Office in Al Qusais. The initiative was officially inaugurated at the Regional Office rooftop, which is already operational. The DIP logistics center and hypermarket outlets will go live in September and October, while the Al Warqa site is slated for November. Once completed, the initiative will stand among the most comprehensive renewable energy rollouts in the UAE retail sector.
Positive Zero is delivering the project as a full turnkey solution, covering build, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the solar rooftops. Additional sustainability projects are also planned before the end of the year.
The environmental impact is expected to be considerable. Over the course of the lease, the solar plants will generate more than 37 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy, preventing the release of over 25,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. This reduction equates to powering over 5,200 homes for a year, charging two billion smartphones, or planting over 400,000 trees grown over a decade.
Salim M.A, Director of Lulu Global Operations, emphasized the Group’s commitment:
“Sustainability is at the core of our operations. As a homegrown brand in the UAE, we are proud to align our efforts with the country’s national goals for a greener future. This solar initiative is a meaningful step in reducing our environmental footprint while embracing innovation in energy efficiency. This agreement extends our relationship with Positive Zero, whom we have been working with since 2020.”
David Auriau, CEO of Positive Zero, highlighted the retail sector’s potential:
“There is huge potential to deploy clean energy in retail, and once again LuLu Group has shown strong commitment by implementing tangible solutions in line with national sustainability strategies. Beyond environmental gains, these efforts are already reducing operating costs. Building an integrated clean energy ecosystem will accelerate both environmental and economic returns for LuLu.”
By investing in renewable energy at scale, LuLu Group is setting a new benchmark for the retail industry’s role in advancing the UAE’s energy transition, proving that sustainable practices can deliver both environmental impact and commercial value.
