Etihad Airways has introduced its new Airbus A321LR aircraft on flights between Abu Dhabi and Kolkata, marking the debut of the jet on Indian routes. The move strengthens Etihad’s position in the Indian aviation market and brings a new standard of luxury and comfort to one of its busiest destinations.
The inaugural flight, EY222, landed at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 8:35 pm on 24 September to a sold-out cabin across First, Business, and Economy classes. All eight weekly return flights on the Abu Dhabi–Kolkata route will now be served exclusively by the A321LR.
Expanding Presence in India
Etihad operates 183 weekly flights across 11 Indian cities, connecting travelers from India to the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and North America. Kolkata alone welcomes more than 135,000 passengers annually on Etihad services, making it a critical hub for both leisure and business travel.
The airline is responding to surging demand from corporate travelers, overseas students, and those visiting friends and family. Growing investment in West Bengal’s IT and financial services sectors is also driving an increase in business travel.
Upgraded Travel Experience
The A321LR has been designed to provide a premium experience on short and medium-haul routes. Etihad’s latest cabin innovations are featured across three classes:
- First Suites: Two enclosed suites with sliding doors for privacy, lie-flat beds, and a 20-inch 4K screen. Guests enjoy wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and Etihad’s renowned fine-dining service. Chauffeur-driven transfers and concierge services complement the experience on the ground.
- Business Class: Fourteen lie-flat seats in a 1-1 herringbone layout, offering direct aisle access and window views. Each seat features a 17.3-inch 4K screen, luxury Armani/Casa furnishings, and enhanced storage.
- Economy Class: 144 ergonomically designed seats with generous legroom, 13.3-inch 4K touchscreens, USB charging, and Bluetooth pairing. Passengers can access Etihad’s E-Box entertainment system, featuring films, series, and games from across the globe.
Across all cabins, passengers benefit from high-speed Wi-Fi suitable for streaming, expanded overhead storage, and an elevated hospitality experience provided by Etihad’s award-winning crew.
Commitment to Innovation and Service
Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De, said the aircraft reflects the airline’s continued investment in the Indian market.
“India is an important market for Etihad and we’re incredibly proud to be in Kolkata to welcome our newest aircraft, the A321LR, on its inaugural flight to India. Whether choosing our luxurious First Suites, lie-flat Business seats, or next-generation Economy cabin, our guests will enjoy a superior flying experience in Etihad’s signature style.”
Etihad has taken delivery of two A321LRs since July, with a further 28 scheduled to join the fleet. The aircraft introduction demonstrates the airline’s strategy of combining technological innovation with its hallmark service standards to elevate passenger experience.
Flight Schedule
From 24 September, Etihad will operate eight weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and Kolkata, with departures from both cities offered at convenient timings across the week.
By introducing the A321LR, Etihad is setting new benchmarks for comfort and connectivity on the Abu Dhabi–Kolkata route, strengthening ties between India and the UAE while enhancing options for global travelers.
