Driving the fusion of quantum science and satellite technology for secure global data networks

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research centre of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has entered into a strategic collaboration with Honeywell to accelerate the development of quantum-secure satellite communication systems, ensuring enhanced protection for sensitive information transmitted worldwide.

As quantum computing progresses at speed, long-standing encryption models face increasingly significant vulnerabilities. Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides a resilient alternative by exploiting the quantum nature of light to generate encryption keys that cannot be intercepted or tampered with, offering a means of safeguarding data against future computational threats.

Under the new initiative, Honeywell’s ‘QKDSat’ technology will be integrated with TII’s Abu Dhabi Quantum Optical Ground Station (ADQOGS) to trial and validate secure QKD links between satellites and ground-based quantum infrastructure. This development is a major step toward establishing quantum-resilient communication networks capable of supporting government, defence and commercial sectors.

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, said: “This collaboration is a significant step toward building global quantum-secure networks in the UAE and beyond. It brings together Honeywell’s track record in aerospace innovation and TII’s expertise in quantum technologies to address one of the most pressing challenges of the digital era: how we protect our most critical information in a quantum-powered future.”

Lisa Napolitano, Vice President and General Manager, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, commented: “Turning quantum science into operational capability requires proven space engineering. Honeywell’s heritage in secure satellite systems allows us to take these concepts from laboratory testing to real-world missions. Teaming up with TII ensures that together we’re advancing technologies that can deliver trusted, quantum-secure communications on a global scale.”

Developed and operated by TII, ADQOGS is an advanced optical ground station designed for satellite-based quantum communication trials, enabling information to be encoded onto photons and used to transport encryption keys securely between orbit and Earth. Its integration with Honeywell’s QKDSat will allow researchers to demonstrate long-range QKD over satellite links, addressing the distance limitations of terrestrial quantum fibre networks and enabling the creation of truly global quantum communication systems.

The partnership highlights both organisations’ shared ambition to accelerate trusted, quantum-secure communication capabilities and showcases Abu Dhabi’s growing leadership in shaping the future of advanced cybersecurity technologies.
