Oliver Rowland has claimed the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Championship, sealing the title in a thrilling Round 14 of the season at the Hankook Berlin E-Prix. The Nissan driver’s fourth-place finish was enough to shut the door on rival Pascal Wehrlein, who faded dramatically after starting on pole and finished outside the points in 16th.
Rowland’s steady climb through a chaotic race defined by strategic ATTACK MODE activations, intense overtakes, and energy management, was capped by a smart and calculated drive. Despite briefly surging into the lead mid-race, Rowland made the mature choice to avoid risky battles in the final laps, ceding position to faster drivers while keeping his championship hopes secure.
“Honestly, I was just thinking before the race not to have too much damage going into London!” said an emotional Rowland. “I can’t believe it… it’s just unbelievable.”
The win went to Nick Cassidy of Jaguar TCS Racing, who charged from 20th on the grid to take victory with a superbly executed race strategy. Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Penske) and Jake Dennis (Andretti) completed the podium, pushing Rowland into fourth — exactly the position he needed to seal the title.
The race initially looked poised for a Porsche-dominated affair, with Wehrlein leading and aided by teammates António Félix da Costa and the CUPRA-supported drivers. But as the race wore on and ATTACK MODE strategies unfolded, Wehrlein lost ground rapidly and could not recover.
Rowland’s second ATTACK MODE boost on Lap 34 proved decisive, helping him gain critical track position. From there, he stayed out of trouble as rivals battled hard behind, ensuring a clean path to the championship.
“By Lap 30, I realised I had to go all in,” Rowland admitted. “Everyone was getting stuck in, so I did the same and it worked.”
With this result, Rowland becomes the earliest Formula E title winner since da Costa sealed the championship in Berlin in 2020. His consistency and aggressive-yet-mature racecraft across the season saw him emerge as a deserving champion.
Wehrlein, visibly frustrated after the chequered flag, now turns his attention to salvaging the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ Championships for TAG Heuer Porsche, who still lead Nissan narrowly — 226 to 204 points in the Teams’ standings, and 342 to 335 in the Manufacturers’ battle.
Formula E heads next to the double-header season finale at ExCeL London on 26–27 July, where Rowland will take a deserved victory lap at his home race.
Cassidy, who has now won three consecutive races in Berlin, praised Rowland post-race:
“He’s been a class act all year. World Champion with a weekend to spare – that’s seriously impressive.”
The weekend proved equally redeeming for Dennis and Vergne, both of whom rebounded from recent frustrations to take podium spots and momentum into London.
