Terry Fox Run a superb success

Nearly 20,000 people walked, ran and rollerbladed along the Corniche on Friday 21st February as they took part in the annual Terry Fox Run.

Through donations and T-shirt sales, the capital’s instalment of the global charity run raised close to AED 387,000, with the funds being used to support cancer research in the UAE. Since its inaugural run in the country in 1994, the annual event has collectively raised around AED 15 million, helping 42 cancer research projects in various universities, hospitals and institutes around the UAE.

One student was especially inspired by the story of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. Megan Godley, a Grade 4 student at Gems American Academy, gathered classmates to hold a fundraising bake sale. Megan and her friends raised AED 1,750 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation and she even got to meet Terry’s sister Judith Fox-Alder on the special day.

“When I met Judith Fox after the run, she said ‘Terry would have been proud of you’. I was so excited and honoured to hear this. It made my mom cry,” Megan said.
