New depths for Emiratis

A local freediving academy is calling on Emiratis to tap into their heritage by taking on an underwater challenge.

Freediving UAE is seeking local citizens with snorkelling or scuba diving experience to tackle the ‘6 to 60 in 6’ test.

The challenge aims to get six Emiratis fit to dive to 60 metres in just six months to help bring back the glory of the country’s pearl diving days.

FreedivingUAE is a community of professional freedivers who specialise in courses and training in the underwater activity, which requires swimmers to dive to great depths by holding their breath. The organisation aims to create a national team to participate in local and international competitions.

“In 2015 we want to send the first UAE national freediving team to the AIDA (Association Internationale pour le Développement de l’Apnée) Team World Championships. To achieve this goal we need to train six Emiratis to reach 60m in six months,” said Alex Boulting, co-founder of FreedivingUAE.

Emirati diver Ahmed Khoori currently holds the UAE national record for free diving at 45m for a constant weight dive and 46 metres for free immersion. FreedivingUAE is bringing in Khoori, along with a selection of experienced specialists, to coach the selected applicants in reaching the 60m goal.

“We think there are lots of potential Emirati freedivers who would be up for this challenge,” added Boulting.
