Petrolheads flocked to Yas Marina Circuit for the first round of the new Yas Super Street Challenge, a competitive street racing series.

Over 90 drivers from the UAE sat behind the wheel of their own cars in the first two days of the series. The drivers battled it out on the circuit’s purpose-built drag racing strip in a fight to be crowned ‘King of the Street’.

The drivers took part in qualifying rounds and races in five categories: Super Street – Open Category, Super Street, Index 11.5, Index 10.5 and 4×4 Super Street SUV. In each category, the top three racers walked away with AED 15,000, AED 10,000 or AED 5,000.

Ali Al Suwaidi won the Super Street – Open Category, claiming his AED 15,000 prize. Waleed Al Hosani nabbed the title in the Super Street category, Marei Al Katheeri in the Index 11.5 category and Salah Al Amoudi in the Index 10.5 category. Saif Al Kaabi took the title in the 4×4 Super Street SUV category.

Speaking about the new drag racing series, the motorsport manager at Yas Marina Circuit, Saud Al Qaydi, said: “Street racing is extremely popular among the UAE’s youth and we are delighted to be able to facilitate such a fun grassroots event. During the next three rounds of the competition, the action won’t stop as our drivers compete for the overall series title of ‘King of the Street’. If you love raw racing thrills, don’t miss out.”

The next round will be held on 26th and 27th February. To stay up to date contact: 02 659 9800 www.facebook.com/yasmarinacircuit www.yasmarinacircuit.com
