Transplant girl back in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi resident and cancer survivor Sarah Jean Masinas returned to the capital earlier this month after a successful bone marrow transplant operation abroad.

After community wide fundraising efforts, the Filipino family managed to
raise a whopping AED 900,000 to pay for the costly transplant at Uppsala Hospital in Sweden.

Returning just before the 21-year-old’s birthday on 12th October, Sarah Jean is currently in remission and receiving weekly treatments and anti-rejection medication at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical Hospital.

“We have not yet observed Sarah’s birthday, however we plan to celebrate on 30th November, 100 days post transplant. Each day is precious in reaching this milestone,” says Sally Masinas, mother of Sarah Jean.

The treatment was so successful the Masinas family was able to return to the UAE a full month before they expected. Currently on her 60th day post transplant, Sarah Jean is optimistic about her situation and plans on studying psychology when she is healthy enough.

“I’d like to thank all the readers who supported us both financially and with their prayers – it made a big difference. We are hopeful there is no relapse so Sarah Jean can continue her studies and fulfill her dreams of helping others,” adds Sally.
