On Saturday 6th December, at 8pm at the Emirates Palace Auditorium, a line-up of international opera singers will treat fans of ‘bel canto’ to Puccini’s La Bohème. In this concert version, sopranos Monica De Rosa McKay and Julia Teal Kermott, tenor Gian Luca Pasolini, baritone Giuseppe Altomare, and bass Luca Gallo – accompanied by pianist-conductor Piero Corradino Giovannini – will be joined by actress Claudia Barbieri Di Maggio as the story’s narrator.

Playing the part of tragic heroin Mimì is critically acclaimed Italian soprano Monica De Rosa McKay. After studying music with world-class teachers, including iconic tenor Luciano Pavarotti, she performed around the world – from France, England and Italy to Mexico, Venezuela and the US – and is now based in the UAE. We caught up with her ahead of the Abu Dhabi performance.

What inspired you to become a singer?

My father has been a key figure in this decision. He was a musician and inspired me with the passion for music.

Do you have a favourite composer?

I love all Italian composers. At the moment Puccini is among my favourites. La Bohème has always been in my heart, as it’s the role of Mimì.

Why do you think Italian opera is so popular?

Passions are timeless. We still love as we did in the 1800s, we just live it slightly differently. This is why the music still finds its way into people’s heart.

What do you like of the role of Mimì?

I always love characters portraying fragile yet tenacious women; Mimì is plagued by a terrible illness but she does not give up. Her love for Rodolfo keeps her willing to battle. She is very humble but also very much able to stand up for herself. And of course, beside the plot, I really love the music score.

Any advice for first-time listeners?

Try to read the story before the concert, but once there just lose yourself in the music and enjoy the show.
