It can be scary preparing for your first child. We speak with experts and mums in the capital to give you first-hand advice

Being a first time mother can be exciting and daunting at the same time. While the feeling of joy is indescribable, the accompanying responsibilities can be overwhelming.

Dr Hala Fikri Mohammed El-Hagrasi, a consultant-paediatrician at Burjeel Hospital, says, “Parenthood brings mixed emotions including happiness, satisfaction and anxiety.

“The mother will find herself suddenly trying to adapt to a completely different lifestyle and habits, which she is probably not prepared for.”

Dr Hala explains that both parents are likely to suffer from lack of sleep for several months after the baby’s birth. This and the sudden change in routine can lead to self-doubt with the mother questioning her ability to take care of her child and, in some cases, postpartum depression, a clinical condition that is characterised by anxiety, irritability and lack of energy.

Dr Bushra El-Zoabi, a paediatrician at HealthPlus Family Centre, stresses how important it is for new mums to have a solid support system made up of her spouse, family, friends and paediatrician.

She says, “Just knowing someone is listening can boost a mother’s confidence as she adjusts. To make the transition easier, a mother must reach out to her loved ones and her doctor, and not keep her emotions locked up.”

The feeling of anxiety is momentary though, and mothers eventually discover the joy of their newfound role.

“Motherhood is very fulfilling,” adds Dr Bushra. “Parents regain a sense of purpose and realise how much they enjoy this new stage in their life.”

Tips for newbie mums

Don’t multitask

Dr Hala says, “Take time to play with your baby without stressing about other responsibilities; some chores around the house can wait a little longer.”

Educate yourself

Read books about babies and motherhood, and join online forums or local groups for mums such as Moms Guide Abu Dhabi where you can meet other new mums who are going through the same experience.

Make me-time

Dr Hala advises, “Eat well, have a walk, work out and spend time with your husband to give yourself some much deserved quality time.”

Dr Bushra adds, “It won’t hurt to focus on yourself even for a few minutes. Do things that you enjoyed doing in the past.”

Relax

“If you are exhausted but can’t sleep, try shutting your eyes and relaxing for ten minutes whenever you have the chance. Listening to relaxing tunes, doing yoga and other relaxation techniques can be beneficial,” says Dr Hala.

Make the most of the experience

“Cherish and treasure every moment because children grow up quickly. Enjoy motherhood instead of stressing about getting everything done on time and in the right way,” adds Dr Hala.
