In a city full of skyscrapers, it’s easy to forget the habitat that came before them.

However, the cost of rapid urbanisation is that more species than ever are in danger of extinction, both on land and in the sea.

According to a report by the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi, the overall number of commercial fish in the UAE has declined by 80 percent in the last 30 years and human pollution is still a constant threat.

To promote awareness of the fragile marine ecosystem, a new event will test environmental enthusiasts in the corporate world in a treasure hunt with a difference.

The Great Green Race, hosted by Yas Mall and Emirates Wildlife Society-Worldwide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF), is dedicated to educating residents on the importance of marine conservation.

On 24th February, teams of intrepid explorers will be combing the mall for clues and solving environmentally themed riddles in a two-hour race to the prize.

Puzzles will involve a mix of intellectual and physical problem-solving activities based on the theme of endangered marine life in and around Abu Dhabi.

The day of activities will also include something for the kids, with educational stands to highlight the importance of preserving the environment.

Coastal crusaders should sign up by 18th February to take part. All proceeds from the event will go towards EWS-WWF’s marine conservation programme.
