Gulf Medical University (GMU), owned by Thumbay Group, marked a major academic milestone this week as 1,189 students formally entered the healthcare profession through the university’s annual White Coat Ceremony 2025.

The ceremony, a defining tradition for aspiring health professionals worldwide, saw every undergraduate student don the symbolic white coat and recite the professional oath, underscoring their commitment to patient care, confidentiality, and ethical practice.

This year’s intake reflects GMU’s broad academic spectrum across medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, health sciences, management, and AI in healthcare programs. Students were enrolled at multiple levels—foundation, diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, internship, and residency—bringing the university’s total to 1,189 learners from 111 nationalities since its inception.

For GMU, the white coat is more than attire. It is a public promise of trust and responsibility. The ceremony emphasized four core pillars expected from every GMU student from their very first day: professionalism, empathy, scientific rigor, and teamwork. The university stressed that every clinical skill must be grounded not only in technical competence but also in ethics and patient safety.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, highlighted the significance of the moment:

“The white coat is a symbol of trust that patients extend to you even before they know your name. At Thumbay Group, our vision is to be the biggest network of Medical Education Centers in the world.”

Echoing this sentiment, Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of GMU, said:

“Today’s White Coat Ceremony 2025 is a reminder that competence without compassion is incomplete. The white coat is a daily nudge to listen carefully, act ethically, and keep learning. As you step into labs, clinics, and communities, remember that professionalism isn’t an exam you pass—it’s a habit you practice.”

During the event, students received their coats on stage, took the professional oath, and were formally welcomed by faculty and clinical leaders from GMU’s Academic Health System. The university emphasized expectations around patient-centered care, interprofessional collaboration, research literacy, and the ethical use of technology in clinical decision-making.

GMU’s educational approach integrates early clinical exposure, simulation-based training, and mentorship in research. This comprehensive model ensures that graduates are not only technically competent but also effective communicators and ethical practitioners capable of delivering safe and effective care in multidisciplinary teams.

As one of the leading medical institutions in the region, GMU maintains close integration between education, clinical care, and research through its Academic Health System. Thumbay Healthcare, the parent network, operates the largest private academic healthcare system in the UAE, with a capacity of 3,100 beds across hospitals, clinics, labs, and pharmacies. This extensive clinical infrastructure offers students real-world training opportunities in diverse care environments.

The White Coat Ceremony 2025 thus marked more than just the start of classes; it set a professional standard for students, reminding them that trust, compassion, and integrity will define their journey as future healthcare leaders.
