Cardi B trial sparks memes over courtroom wigs

US rapper Cardi B has become the subject of viral memes and online commentary after her courtroom testimony in Los Angeles took unexpected turns — including a mid-session wig change.

The Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, is facing a civil lawsuit filed by former security guard Emani Ellis. The suit alleges Cardi B assaulted Ellis in the hallway of a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office in 2018. The rapper has denied the claims.

Court documents reviewed by NBC News and Today.com state Ellis accused Cardi B of hitting her in the head and body, spitting on her, and using racial slurs. Ellis further claims the rapper leveraged her fame to have her dismissed from her job. She is seeking damages for medical expenses, psychological treatment, emotional distress, and lost wages.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, much of the public attention has focused on Cardi B’s unfiltered testimony and courtroom persona. Clips shared widely on X, TikTok, and Instagram show the rapper delivering blunt responses, which many fans found humorous.

One viral post compared the proceedings to a sketch comedy skit, attracting more than 7 million views within a day. “Cardi B in court today was like an SNL skit,” the post read.

During testimony, the rapper admitted to being upset during the 2018 incident. “Yes, I was angry!” she told the court. “Because I am expecting! This girl is about to beat me up!” At another point, she joked: “When I’m pregnant, I’m very disabled. Do you want me to tell you what I can’t do?” The remarks reportedly prompted laughter inside the courtroom.

Beyond her words, Cardi B’s appearance also drew attention. Social media users highlighted her decision to switch between a short black wig and a long blonde one during the trial. The sudden change even confused one lawyer, who asked, “Which one is your real hair? Are they both real?” To which Cardi B simply replied, “They’re wigs.”

Meme accounts and cultural commentators quickly joined in. Influencer Saint Hoax described her as “Cardi at her Cardi-est,” while writer Evan Ross Katz joked he would have been ejected from court for laughing too hard at her testimony.

Still, proceedings have turned tense at times. In one exchange, Ellis’s lawyer pressed Cardi B to repeat offensive remarks allegedly made in 2018. The rapper obliged, repeating the words aloud in court. Her lawyer, Peter J. Anderson, objected to the confrontational tactic, prompting the judge to intervene: “Why don’t we just cool things down a bit? Please ask her real questions.”

According to media professor Aymar Jean Christian of Northwestern University, part of Cardi B’s enduring appeal is her refusal to tone down her personality. “She’s a huge star because she can’t help but be herself,” he said, noting that her unapologetic manner contrasts with typical courtroom decorum.

The case, which has drawn comparisons to Gwyneth Paltrow’s high-profile ski crash trial in 2023, is expected to continue after the Labor Day break, with a verdict anticipated next week.
