All white on the night

Following a (long overdue) visit to the dentist this week to get our pearly whites, err, whitened we started thinking about teeth in general.

Chatting to our dentist we were shocked to learn that the biggest problem he has with patients here in the capital is that they just don’t brush their teeth – full stop, never. Now, as a regular morning and evening brusher we just can’t imagine NEVER brushing our teeth.

As children we probably would have thought this was a great idea as brushing our teeth always seemed like a chore, but I’m sure the playground taunts of “dog breath” and “stinky” would have got to
us eventually.

And it’s not just bad breath that would become an issue. With all the sugary and teeth-staining foods that we consume these days, without a regular brush, surely your teeth would start to hurt, and even go brown. Yuck! Call me fussy, but I’ve never been a fan of brown, stumpy teeth. I’m pretty sure cracking a smile made up of stumpy, stained teeth wouldn’t impress colleagues, friends or potential partners either.

With this in mind we were excited to read all about HAAD’s Abu Dhabi Smiles project last month (which is still ongoing) seeking to increase awareness about the importance of oral hygiene, as well as, educate parents and school children on the proper ways to protect teeth through healthy eating, proper brushing and flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly,

For the latest information on the project visit: www.haad.ae/schoolsforhealth. The site also has some useful documents, available to download, that will help you engage your children, making brushing their teeth fun!

Happy brushing Abu Dhabi!
