Algorithm And Soul

With a mesmerising mixture of algorithms, visuals and music, Tacit Group is aiming to redefine 21st century art. And you get a chance to experience it firsthand.

Composed of Jaeho Chang and Jinwon Lee – who’s also known as Gazaebal, which means ‘lobster foot’ in Korean – the group creates mathematical code systems and uses them to improvise performances on stage.

“During the performance the systems are revealed visually and sonically, so that the audience might hear using their eyes,” Gazaebal explained.

Aiming to break the barrier between performer and audience, Tacit Group doesn’t just perform a finished, polished product: “We hope that by showing not just the finished piece but the process of chatting or gaming which generates it, we involve our viewers more intensely and break the conventional divide between performers and audience members.”

The group uses a number of different programmes to test their ideas, experiment with visuals, design the sounds and transport the live sound work.

“Algorithmic art is like a wind chime,” Gazaebal explains. “The creator hits the pipes, which can make sounds, and a combination of the sound is done by the wind. In other words, the creator will create a system, and the system creates the final result.

“We see the computer as an instrument and play systems not scores, so audiences will see the system which connects sounds, visuals, and text. Once they realise the system, they will get into the works more.”

Tacit Group’s UAE debut will see them performing pieces largely featuring games and text. The group wants to introduce new audiences to the core concept behind their work and also has plans to perform an Arabic version of one of their pieces titled ‘in C’.

Tacit Group performs at NYUAD Arts Centre on 11th and 12th November. Free but RSVP required. For more information, visit: nyuad-artscenter.org
