Time to talk Turkey

Fast food. Quick, easy and rather greasy, right? Wrong. Shawarma Time on Najda Street has taken the concept of the Turkish traditional treat into a healthy and filling meal. Abu Dhabi Week made a pit stop to see what the place is all about.

A feeling of detoxification is experienced when walking in to this eatery. Clean glass, zesty greens and crisp wood finishes set the tone for an establishment that has a clear idea on what healthy food is.

We have to be honest, when we sat down at our table, we were already mulling over our ideas about shawarmas: fatty meat with fries and pickles, oozing with a thick sauce all stuffed into a white bread wrap. It doesn’t exactly get our taste buds salivating.  But manager Lilian Joumah explained why they are different here: “Typically, the meat spits need fat in order to keep the meat moist – around 40 to 60 percent is fat. However we’ve reduced this to 20 percent. Yes it may mean the product dries out quicker, but we want to deliver more meat, less fat and maintain a fresh and healthy product.” said Joumah.

Firstly we chose the flavour. We opted for the chicken and as we like it spicy, the Turkish-style option. Next, the style. Despite a variety of options, we stayed traditional and went for the sandwich.  Then it was time for the sauce. Keeping the heat going, we had a gentle drizzle of the chili. And finally a choice between Belgium fries or a baked potato. We really liked the fries being served separately, leaving more room for chicken and vegetables inside the sandwich, and not clogging it up. Perfect.

Suitably full, we enjoyed one of the fresh, cool drinks on offer to sooth our tingling taste buds. Shawarma time is great for an energy boost at lunch and just as satisfying enjoyed with friends and family for an evening meal.
