National Day celebrations will be even more explosive than normal this year, as the capital expands the spectacle to 11 shows across six sites.

The number of fireworks at the 42nd National Day will rocket to 63,410 over the two-day period from the 1st to 2nd December. The event has been commissioned by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and with highly acclaimed pyrotechnics artist and director Angel Gonzalez – the man behind this year’s Rio de Janeiro Revellion show – ready to light the touchpaper, this year’s celebrations are bound to have residents oo’ing and aah’ing more than ever across the emirate.

A 12-minute show along the Abu Dhabi Corniche will take place on 1st and 2nd December at 9pm. Also on these dates, Khor Al Maqta, in front of the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr hotel, will ignite celebrations at 8.30pm on both days. Also in the capital, a three-minute show will bring to a close the National Day parade celebrations on 2nd December, Yas Island at 8pm.

The heritage heartland of Al Ain will be lit up with a 10-minute show on 1st and 2nd December, 8.30pm at Hili Fun City, with entry to the park free. And finally, the emirate’s western region of Al Gharbia will see a seven-minute show at 8.30pm on December 1st and 2nd in Madinat Zayed and on Delma Island.

Faisal Al Sheikh, director, Events Bureau, TCA Abu Dhabi is excited about the new additions to this year’s event.

“The spread of the shows will bring the celebrations in reach of many more people and is part of a wider programme being planned to include parades, concerts and great entertainment,” said Al Sheikh. “The blockbuster programme which will be rolled out in the coming week will ensure that Abu Dhabi is the place to be this National Day weekend when we invite everyone to join us as we celebrate the 42nd anniversary of our homeland.”
