The consumption of local vegetables is growing according to a new survey by a local farmers’ centre.

A study by Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre (ADFSC) revealed that nearly three-quarters of consumers now buy local vegetables because of their freshness, ten per cent more than in 2011.

The second study completed by ADFSC interviewed 800 residents across Abu Dhabi to gauge the public perception of local produce.

“The first study in 2011 was commissioned to help better position ADFSC’s promotional and branding activities with respect to Abu Dhabi grown produce,” said Chris Hirst, chief executive officer, ADFSC.

“In November 2012, ADFSC launched its Local Harvest brand showcasing fresh and safe local fruit, vegetables and livestock products from farms in Abu Dhabi.”

The survey also revealed that consumers believe local vegetables are safe to consume and are produced in an environmentally friendly way. Since its inception, ADFSC has worked to ensure that Abu Dhabi farmers follow internationally recognised standards for production.

Local Harvest products, including fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, dates and honey, are available in major hypermarkets, souk stores, supermarkets and online.
