Residents help refugees in harsh winter conditions

The UAE has continued to show its support for refugees in Levant countries, as over AED 160 million has now been donated to help those in need after a recent snowstorm.

The Show Compassion campaign, an initiative launched by President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide winter aid for refugees in countries including Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Gaza, has reached AED 163 million and it’s still rising.

Some nine million Syrian refugees and homeless people in neighbouring countries are facing harsh winter conditions. A blizzard known as Storm Huda, or Zeina, brought temperatures of -10°C and 110kmph winds.

Thanks to the campaign, many basic needs such as fuel for heating, shelter, clothing, medicine and food have been supplied to refugees.

Maximus Air, the UAE-based cargo airline, delivered over 40 tonnes of donated emergency winter aid including food, blankets and clothes.

Many UAE residents donated after receiving an SMS from Emirates Red Crescent (ERC). Etisalat and du subscribers sent an SMS with the word ‘HELP’ to 7100 or 7200 to pledge AED 100 or AED 200, respectively. This service finished on Tuesday 13th January.

Donations of clothing, blankets and money are still being accepted at the ERC main branch on Airport Road close to Al Bateen Executive Airport and the drop-off station outside Marina Mall, close to the taxi collection rank. For more information contact: 800 733 [email protected] www.rcuae.ae
