Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is back from 17th to 24th January. The event will turn the spotlight on the latest sustainable solutions for everyday living.

The world’s population is estimated to reach nine billion by 2050, and international and local researchers meeting during this annual global forum – the largest gathering on sustainability in the Middle East – will share essential ideas and solutions on how to support the planet’s rapid growth in a sustainable way.

As part of the week-long initiative, residents and professionals can get involved and learn how to be more environmentally friendly.

Twenty university teams from all over the world will take part in a 1,200km rally across Abu Dhabi with their custom-built, solar-powered cars. The race will be held from 15th to 19th January. There are plenty of opportunities to meet the teams – including the team from the Petroleum Institute Abu Dhabi – on their route. Visit www.adsolarchallenge.org to see the complete schedule of all the stops. Don’t forget to tweet us at @abudhabiweek using the handle #SolarTeamUAE to let us know where you are going to meet them, or share a photo of your experience.

The World Future Energy Summit (WFES) will be hosted at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (Adnec) from 19th to 22nd January. Companies from the energy, water and waste management sectors will present their latest eco-inventions – including solar-powered street lights, hybrid modules that use both solar and wind energy, and a space-based solar power plant that generates energy by collecting sunlight in geostationary orbit. Entry is free to the exhibition, but to take part in conferences, workshops and panel talks, registration is necessary. Registration fees start at AED 2,200. Masdar City, the capital’s eco-friendly community, will welcome visitors on 23rd and 24th January, 10am-9pm, for a free street festival featuring live music, organic food stalls, arts, crafts and entertainment. For more information visit: www.facebook.com/eventsatmasdar
