The capital’s sporty youngsters are getting set for this year’s Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon.

The second instalment of the competition promises to be bigger than last year’s inaugural event – a duathlon – which saw over 100 children involved.

This year, organisers are anticipating over 500 children to register across the two-race formats targeting youngsters aged nine to 16 years. Children in the nine to 12-years category will compete in a dual 200-metre swim and 2km run, dubbed the aquathon. Older competitors will complete a triathlon; a 300m swim, 9km bike ride and 2.5km run. Competitors can take part as individuals or in a team. Some of the world’s top triathletes, including Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee, will be there to cheer on the competitors.

The Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon is presented by Activelife in partnership with Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority and Daman.

“Triathlon is most commonly viewed as a sport for the professionals but with initiatives like this one, we are presenting it in a fun, accessible manner that kids would enjoy, and hopefully be inspired by as a way to stay healthy as they grow older,” said Dr Sven Rohte, chief commercial officer at Daman.

Racing gets underway from the East Plaza on the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon will be on 14th March, one day before the flagship Abu Dhabi International Triathlon. Registration is open at www.abudhabitriathlon.com until 1st March. Entry is AED 50 per individual or AED 100 per team.
