Nearly 100 sailing enthusiasts will retrace a historical trade route in the inaugural Sir Bani Yas Island Offshore Sailing Race.

Held on 18th April, the two-day race will see 90 sailors aboard 13 vessels navigate 175 nautical miles from Sir Bani Yas to Dubai, a course that is dubbed one of the oldest trading routes in the region.

Hosted by Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) in partnership with Anantara Hotels Resorts & Spas, Rotana Jet, Dubai Offshore Sailing Club and Volvo Ocean Race Abu Dhabi Stopover, the event hopes to highlight the capital as a leading winter watersports destination and pay homage to the island’s history.

“There’s a real thrill to this event because it’s the first race to kick off from the island and at the same time a first for the sailors who will be venturing into these waters,” said John Cole, senior asset manager for Sir Bani Yas Corporate Operations at TDIC. “We strongly believe that such an event can put Sir Bani Yas on to the sailing map especially since it offers the best of what sailors and sport enthusiasts look for – a breathtaking location, quality service and a secure marina berthing.”

Sir Bani Yas is home to 36 archaeological sites including a 600AD monastery. Formerly a vital stop on a trade route, the island is now home to 10,000 animals and birds and three Anantara resorts.
