An international basketball legend is set to kick off a local health and fitness initiative later this month.

Former Los Angeles Lakers star and health advocate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will make his way to the capital for the Take a Step for Diabetes Week with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from 28th October.

The Imperial College of London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) initiative includes a series of health and fitness education events as part of the centre’s public health awareness campaign, Diabetes-Knowledge-Action.

Bashar Al Ramahi, ICLDC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are very excited to have Kareem visit the UAE in support of ICLDC’s healthy lifestyle campaign. His participation in various community events hosted by our centres in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain will really help re-enforce the message that a balanced diet and regular exercise are the smart, simple steps needed.”

As part of the week-long programme, Abdul-Jabbar will give an educational talk at a local school about maintaining a balanced diet, preparing a healthy lunchbox and the importance of exercising to avoid diabetes.

The former NBA pro will also be visiting ICLDC facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to promote healthy living and regular exercise.

Abdul-Jabbar holds the NBA’s title of All-Time Leading Scorer with a whopping 38,387 points amassed over his 20-year career. He is now an author and ambassador of education, helping Los Angeles schoolchildren learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Take a Step for Diabetes Week with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar begins the countdown for ICLDC’s annual community event, #WALK2014 on 7th November at Yas Marina Circuit and World Diabetes Day on 14th November.
