Capital’s critters need your help

Abandoned animals across the capital have had their cries answered, as a crisis appeal to help those in need has been launched.

Animal Action – Abu Dhabi, a volunteer group here in the capital has begun work on their first ever crisis appeal and is calling out to residents of the capital, for help.

Currently there are over 130 dogs and cats waiting to be homed, a figure that represents a record high since the organisation was founded in 2010. With no shelter to house the animals, the group relies on volunteers to find homes for the deserted pets.

Speaking about the current situation in the capital, founder Mel Stones said:

“This was the worst summer I have known since we started Animal Action – Abu Dhabi,” said Stones. “Every day we have received calls from owners who want to surrender their pets, usually because they are going away and haven’t made arrangements for their pet to be cared for, or aren’t prepared to accept the associated expense. When we tell them that we already have a record number of animals and can’t take on any more, often they threaten to put the animal on the streets. Saying no is a death sentence to many of these poor creatures.”
