In a bid to encourage students to explore new fields, schools across the city are setting up innovation clubs as part of a new educational campaign.

Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) has launched the second annual Journey of Discovery (JoD) campaign, where nearly 360,000 students will have access to over 250 innovation clubs by the end of the academic year. These clubs aim to get students involved in fields such as nuclear energy, robotics and technology.

The JoD campaign doesn’t stop there, as parents have also been called upon to encourage students to experiment, innovate and ask questions about the world around them. This has been named the #weya_ayalna – ‘with our children’ – campaign.

Commenting on the campaign, HE Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, director-general of Adec, said: “Innovation is the nation’s bridge to the future, and is not new to the UAE and its leadership, since it has always played an integral role in driving major initiatives forward throughout the history of the emirate, both on a national and international level.”

Maitha Nasser Al Derei, a Grade 5 student at Al Ahad School, told us about her journey to discovery: “I am very curious about mathematics and science. My journey will take me to designing buildings and homes for the poor as an industrial or mechanical engineer.”

One of the school’s ICT teachers Omaira Al Derei added: “There are infinite possibilities for our students to develop and enhance their knowledge base in computer programming, coding, JavaScript and beyond the classroom.”
