The shortlist to select the winners of the 2016 Zayed Future Energy Prize was created this week.

The awards, which recognise innovative contributions to the future of energy and sustainable development, attracted 1,437 entries this year from 97 countries.

Using the criteria of impact, innovation, leadership and long-term vision, the Prize’s Review Committee drew up a shortlist of submissions and nominations.

The committee will consider 33 submissions, including 23 submissions to the Large Corporation, Small and Medium Enterprise and Non-Governmental Organisation categories and 10 nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition, the newly created Global High Schools Committee will consider 49 renewable energy or sustainability-focused project proposals.

HE Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE minister of state and director general of the Zayed Future Energy Prize, said: “With continuing growth in the number of entries we receive, the evaluation committees are a critical part of our mission to establish the Zayed Future Energy Prize as the preeminent international prize for renewable energy and sustainability.”

Last year Panasonic took home the title in the Large Corporation category, M-KOPA Solar the Small and Medium Enterprise and Liter of Light  the Non-Governmental Organisation title.

The committee will meet again in early October with the eventual winners announced in early 2016.
