Walk returns to tackle diabetes

With nearly 20 percent of the Abu Dhabi population being diabetic, it’s no wonder the UAE community is being called upon to attend an annual healthy living walk to highlight the disease.

Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) and Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) have collaborated once again for the ninth edition of #WalkWithMeUAE, an initiative that invites you to walk Yas Marina Circuit as part of the WALK 2015 programme.

HE Professor Maha Taysir Barakat, director general of HAAD, explained: “One of our key drivers at HAAD is educating the Abu Dhabi community on priority health issues, and this can only be done by forging the right partnerships with our local stakeholders. HAAD is collaborating with ICLDC to address the issue of diabetes – a major public health concern in the emirate. This partnership will see us reaching out to the community and engaging them to not only combat diabetes, but adopt an overall healthy lifestyle for years to come.”

In the build-up to the main WALK 2015 event on 13th November, a series of six weekly ‘mini walks’ has been organised across the emirate, including a ladies-only event. Dates, times and locations can be found at www.walk2015.com, which is also where you must register and purchase tickets for the main walk.

Those who attend with family, friends and work colleagues are being encouraged to post on social media using the hashtag #WalkWithMeUAE.
