My kids love to play sports – how can I help them prevent sports related injuries?

The most common cause of sports injuries is the failure to warm-up sufficiently before undertaking strenuous activity. A sufficient warm-up session should last at least five to ten minutes and involve the gentle stretching and exercising of muscles such as jogging to prepare them for the strenuous activity to follow.

Cooling down is just as important. Some gentle stretches to lengthen the muscles and tendons and walking around are recommended exercises.

If you have not undertaken strenuous exercise for some time, it is especially important to build up your stamina and strength gradually to avoid injury. Over time, you will notice your fitness increase and you will be able to undertake physical activity for longer periods of time.

For some sports, protective equipment is also important to prevent injuries to vulnerable parts of the body. Correct footwear, for example, can offer support to the foot and ankle, helping to prevent twists and sprains. Remaining hydrated is also important so as to prevent mental and physical fatigue when exercising.

Our advisor is Dr Hans J Poessel of the Al Rawdah German Medical Center. For more information, visit www.argmc-uae.com or call 02 652 0200.
