Hair today….gone tomorrow!

hairtoday

When we heard about the new painless laser hair removal treatments being offered at Kaya Skin Clinic we were sceptical – painless and hair removal have never been words we’ve put together in a sentence before. Intrigued by all things technical we head over to investigate.

We arrive at the Karamah branch and are surprised at the clinical ambience. The beige walls and women dressed neatly in scrubs actually calms us down (since we’re a teensy bit nervous), because we feel like we’re in expert hands.

After a few minutes we’re called into another room and meet with the soft-spoken dermatologist, Dr Kristine Gapay. Dressed smartly in her white coat and pearls, she sits across from us for a chat about the procedure and patiently answers all of our questions.

After quickly checking to see if the hair to be removed is suitable for the treatment (we’re trying to rid our knuckles of a few pesky strands), the area is cleansed. As Dr Gapay leaves, our skin practioner, Marah takes over. She marks the hair to be removed on our fingers with a white pencil. Afterwards she shaves the area with a razor and applies a cooling gel to ready our skin for the treatment.

We’re sitting comfortably and after being given a pair of fantastic Robocop-looking shades to protect our eyes, Marah begins zapping away. For our hair and skin type, we are using the Diode Laser, which according to Dr Gapay has a “lower fluence that accounts for multiple passes on the skin.” This means the deplight laser is repeatedly passed over the skin, causing heat to build up around the hair for pain free removal.

The verdict?

We’ve been warned that because we’ve chosen a bony area we may feel a few pricks. The first zap does sting slightly but after a few fiddles with the machine we’re fine. It’s quite a strange sensation as the cooling gel and special cold tip on the laser gun keep things chilly while the gun is passed over the skin to generate heat.

It’s all over in a short 30 minutes. Even though it’s just been one session, we see a delayed re-growth period. Definitely not painful but rather very strange, we actually sort of enjoy the cold and warm sensation.
