Open mornings to be held Friday 11th and 18th January

With less than a month before the next dragon-boating regatta in February, the Abu Dhabi Capital Dragons are to hold two open mornings to encourage new paddlers to get involved and give paddling a go.

The sport that originated 2,500 years ago in China, is practiced by more than 50 million worldwide and is open to all who are interested in “fun, fitness, friendship and competition”.

All abilities, ages and nationalities are welcome to come along to the mornings’ activities, which will take place on Friday 11th and 18th January on the beach in front of the Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club, just before the Heritage Village on the Marina breakwater.

“We are open to everyone,” says Alexandra Harrison, secretary, Abu Dhabi Capital Dragons. “I’ve been in Abu Dhabi two years and I’ve made so many friends through the club - we’ve already got a great mix of men and women, ages, abilities and nationalities; it’s such a great way to get fit and meet new people.”

“Both weekends will showcase what dragon boating is all about. There will be activities on the beach; we’ll get people into the boats to give it a try and we’ll give them a good introduction to the sport,” Harrison says.

New paddlers are asked to bring a T-shirt, shorts, swimwear, sunscreen and water.

The open mornings will be taking place on Friday 11th and 18th January on the Marina Breakwater from 8.30am when Abu Dhabi’s dedicated ladies dragon-boat team, the Capital Dragons Divas, will let it ride until 10am, while the mixed team will get-together from 10am to 11.30am.
