Ten students from Cranleigh Abu Dhabi travelled to Dubai to take part in the International Change The World Model UN Conference.

This annual meeting, hosted in different cities around the world, gives students the chance to debate major issues inspired by the international political agenda as an engaging educative experience.

Together with pupils from all around the globe, including Russia, Italy, China and Pakistan, the Year 8 and 9 UAE students spent a weekend trying to find solutions to challenging real world problems.

In the role of delegates, they discussed, passed resolutions, and voted for and against amendments, passing the diplomacy test with flying colours.

Year 9 student Liam Patell was named Best Delegate in the United Nations Committee on Trade and Development and Julien Lee Heberling, also Year 9, won the Honorable Mention Delegate in the Security Council.

“The purpose of the Model UN is to understand what the world of politics is like,” commented Patell, “to learn how to create legislation, and how to disagree with people in a constructive way.”

“It was awesome, scary and inspiring, all at the same time,” added Tamsin Lae, another Year 9 student.

Their teachers expressed their happiness for the pupils’ achievement; “I could not be prouder of their outstanding work,” said Head of Humanities Morgan Whitfield.
