Record-breaking plunge helps clean up marine environment

The capital has taken its record-breaking achievements to new depths with the success of a recent diving clean-up campaign.

A Guinness World Record breaking number of 300 divers teamed up to collect close to nine tonnes of waste as part of the ‘Dive Together to Protect our Marine Environment’ campaign at Abu Dhabi’s Free Port.

The initiative, which was organised by Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) in partnership with Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), aimed to raise awareness of the increasing amount of marine debris in the ocean.

“We collected an enormous amount of rubbish which will make a big difference to the marine species in our waters,” said Capt Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO, ADPC. “The sea is a source of livelihood for many of us – from the fishermen in the Dhow Harbour to all of the businesses and organisations providing services for the increasing number of cruise ships visiting Abu Dhabi – as a result, protecting the marine environment is a top priority for everyone.”

As part of the campaign, presentations were given on marine and environmental protection as well as appropriate actions to be taken in case of an oil spill.

“We are all working together for the same cause: to protect our beautiful sea life and our precious marine environment,” added Al Shamisi.

A number of organisations participated in the campaign, including Mubadala Petroleum, Tadweer, Abu Dhabi City Municipality and the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi.

“By taking part in campaigns like these, we can protect Abu Dhabi’s coastline,” said HE Eisa Saif Al Qubaisi, general manager, Tadweer. “Marine debris threatens nature, people’s health and the public image of Abu Dhabi. Together we can raise awareness and help maintain a safe and clean marine environment.”
