Leukaemia girl recovering

The family of a young woman who received an emergency transplant in Sweden with the help of funds raised in Abu Dhabi have their fingers crossed there are no complications after the life-saving surgery.

Abu Dhabi resident Sarah Jean Masinas, the 20-year-old Filipina whose battle against leukaemia was reported in Abu Dhabi Week back in March, was flown to Uppsala University Hospital in the Scandinavian country earlier this month after her mother managed to raise the
AED 900,000 needed to fund the procedure.

And after having the bone-marrow transplant she needed to save her life, Sarah is now recovering, and her mother, Sally, is now counting down the days before she can bring her daughter back to the UAE capital.

“With the transplant, there are some untoward incidents which may occur, such as rejection of the transplant,” said Sally. “However we are hopeful that this will not happen and after 100 days we’ll be able to return to Abu Dhabi.

“People were amazed we raised such a huge amount and we proudly tell them that it is because of the generosity and kindness of people in the UAE. I would like to thank those who helped us, friends whom we’ve never met, and of course Abu Dhabi Week for writing about Sarah and making people aware
of her plight.”
