Autism awareness takes centre stage

autismawareness

April is Autism Awareness month, and in an effort to shed light on this condition, residents of the capital have been treated to a variety of educational events raising awareness for the cause.

In association with Abu Dhabi Autism Support Network and Abu Dhabi Art Hub, Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi has hosted initiatives throughout the month at the hotel geared to both the public and its staff.

Currently one in every 68 children is diagnosed with autism and each year, more children are diagnosed with autism than with juvenile diabetes, AIDS or cancer, combined. As the most obvious signs and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between two and three years of age, there is a growing need to educate the community about the importance of early detection.

“It is important for us to engage the community so that there is increased dialogue and action towards better identification, support and education of persons on the Autism Spectrum in Abu Dhabi,” says autism consultant Nipa Bhuptani. “Recognition of their talents and abilities is important towards raising acceptance and awareness.”

From 20th April to 20th May the hotel will host an art exhibition from a young autistic adult. 25 pieces of art by the artist Khaled will be showcased throughout the hotel and are available for purchase. In addition, other initiatives hosted throughout the month included a fun day for families with autistic children on the Corniche beach, an educational seminar for staff and the lighting of the hotel in blue – the hero colour of Autism Speaks.
