Seven Abu Dhabi beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status this week.

Blue Flag is an international award that recognises beaches and marinas for being clean, safe and meeting international criteria regarding water quality, environmental management, safety, site facilities and environmental education.

Three of the Tourism Development and Investment Company’s (TDIC) developments got the award – Saadiyat Beach on Saadiyat island, Sir Bani Yas at the Desert Islands Resort and Al Bateen Wharf in Abu Dhabi.

A total of seven leisure and tourism properties have been awarded Blue Flag status, including Monte-Carlo Beach Club, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort & Spa, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, and Al Yamm Villa Resort on Sir Bani Yas Island.

“We are so proud to announce that we will be raising the Blue Flag across our properties,” said Dr Nathalie Staelens, head of environmental services at TDIC.

“It is an international recognition that shows the efforts we’ve been making to maintain our beaches and marinas to the highest standards.

“This label is recognised by environmentally conscious tourists and visitors around the world,” Staelens added.

TDIC will be working closely with its operators to make sure that the beaches
continue to be maintained and this involves monitoring water quality, publishing the water quality results on a board that can be seen by visitors, providing a number of recycling bins on site and arranging five educational activities annually for visitors.
