Group D

The group is arguably the hardest of them all to call. Germany must be favourites, of course, and are not top seeds for nothing; some of the lesser known squad members have been impressing in friendlies.

Australia don’t play together regularly enough, but have skill and energy to make life difficult for any opponent. Serbia and Ghana are both young sides with a recent history of success, but come into the World Cup on the back of poor warm-up defeats. Local support might just swing it for Ghana, though.

Australia

FIFA ranking: 20
Head coach: Pim Verbeek (since December 2007)
Big issue: A weakfish domestic league means the best players play elsewhere – with consequent problems of distance, time zones, etc getting in the way of training and squad cohesion.
One to watch: Tim Cahill (midfield/attack, Everton)
We predict: Group stage exit
Chances: 150/1

Germany

FIFA ranking: 6
Best World Cup: Winners (1954, 1974 and 1990 – as West Germany)
Big issue: Germany seem to be coming good again, with a strong domestic league and some excellent youngsters coming through – but there’s no clear goalkeeper choice, no Michael Ballack, and Klose is getting on a bit up front.
One to watch: Thomas Müller (forward, Bayern Munich)
We predict: Fourth
Chances: 14/1

Ghana

FIFA ranking: 32
Head coach: Milovan Rajevac (since August 2008
Big issue: Who replaces the injured Michael Essien? Is the entertaining but combustible Sulley Muntari a shoo-in for first red card? Was the 4-1 friendly defeat by Holland just an embarrassing aberration?
One to watch: Dominic Adiyiah (forward, AC Milan)
We predict: Group stage exit
Chances: 100/1

Serbia

FIFA ranking: 15
Head coach: Radomir Antic (since August 2008)
Big issue: Mixes experience with youth and qualified with a respectable haul of 22 goals from 10 games – but losing 1-0 to New Zealand in a warm-up friendly doesn’t seem like great form.
One to watch: Milan Jovanovic (forward, now Liverpool)
We predict: Second round
Chances: 66/1
