‘Urban oasis’ plan for the city

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi has just announced innovative plans to revamp the city, developing new community recreational facilities downtown.

An ‘urban oasis’ will be established in Sector E, which is a densely populated area located between Hamdan Street and Khalifa street, and between Eastern Road and Street 10.

Plans are underway to construct family friendly recreational facilities, community grassy areas and retail outlets, in addition to new car parks. It is hoped the car parks will alleviate congestion in the city area, which is currently home to more than 13,000 residents living in approximately 2,600 apartments.

The project will be delivered by the private sector and the Municipality of Abu Dhabi will formally invite private sector bids in the coming weeks to manage the project, which will encompass a total area of 19,000 sqm.

“The innovative design of this new project will enable the Municipality to address the need to provide a wide range of public facilities in a constrained and highly populated location,” said Rashed Bin Ali Al Omaira, advisor of investments and assets for the general manager’s office at Abu Dhabi Municipality.

“The green space, recreational and retail facilities will enhance the image of the city and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors, while at the same time reducing traffic congestion and boost car parking.”

The development is the first of a series of urban oasis developments that the Municipality is planning.

A benchmark study undertaken by the Municipality highlighted that the densely populated Sector E6 area could be enhanced further by adding 3,000 sqm of leisure, education and sport facilities.
