The 86th Academy Awards are less than a month away, which means some of the year’s best flicks are upon us. With all four of its leading actors nominated for an award – the second film to do so since 1981 – and a spot in the Best Picture line-up, American Hustle is a firm contender at this year’s award gala. Directed by the acclaimed director of Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, David O Russell, the film boasts a stellar cast including Jeremy Renner and Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston and Shea Whigham.
Loosely based on the real life FBI sting operation known as ABSCAM, American Hustle takes place in corrupt 1970s America.
Conman Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and his British partner Sydney Prosser (Adams) are a well-paired duo with Prosser posing as an English aristocrat to pull off seamless scams.
But after being busted, the pair is forced to work for wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper). Thrown into the dangerous but alluring world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia, the expert con artists become players in the biggest game of their life as they plot to expose corrupt politicians including the mayor of Camden, New Jersey.
Meanwhile, Rosenfeld’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) threatens to undermine the entire operation.
American Hustle hits screen this Thursday 13th February.
